Book of the Moment

WITH A TANGLED SKEIN
by
Piers Anthony

Why I like it:

It's Book 3 of Piers Anthony's "Incarnations of Immortality" series. It's a great read, full of imagery and fantasy. I want to have all the 7 books in the series but I only have Books 1 and 3 (I can't find a copy of the other books in our local bookstores here, dang!!

Delicious??

..... I've always considered myself a nerd.....why? because I am one!!.....I love books.....I wasn't (and still isn't) athletic.....I graduated a friggin' valedictorian in elementary.....a leadership and Efficiency medal awardee in High School and a journalism and academic distinction awardee in college.....and I could live without a night life.....

.....I've always been the nerdy and nice guy.....and all my classmates in my years in school have come to associate me with being.....nice.....maybe even boring.....studious.....no time for "lakwatsa".....model ROTC cadet (1st Company, 1st Platoon, 1st Squad, 1st Element Staff Sgt. Dolorfino, ahahahaha!!).....academic.....anemic.....lanky.....

.....yes, I was lanky.....5'10", thin but with baby fat in all the wrong places.....I could never do a single push-up, my sister teases me for having a "soft" body.....but I was never really concerned about being fit.....

.....and then I decided to challenge myself.....I want to be able to do at least 10 push-ups.....so I jogged, started with inclined push-ups (using a chair as support).....until I gained enough strength to do the regular push-up......and I gave myself an assignment: to do 100 push-ups daily.....

.....I followed this assignment religiously.....to the extent that if I miss a day, I'd do 200 the next day to make up for the lost day.....and it's my 14th month of doing it.....and so after 14 months and approximately 42,000 push-ups, here I am.....I couldn't really feeImage hosted by Photobucket.coml a big difference.....but I started to have more confidence......

.....gone are the loose-fitting shirts which make me look lanky.....I realized that fitted shirts make me look taller and bulkier.....and I'm no longer so self-conscious about taking off my shirt.....even though I still have a long way to go before I can achieve the body I like (I still have baby fat).....

.....and then something happened.....

.....I was chatting with someone on YM and the girl I was talking to said I looked "delicious" (she saw my pics in Friendster and she was viewing my webcam)......but what exactly does "delicious" mean??.....is that a good thing??.....was that a compliment??.....I never did know how to react to that comment so I just changed the topic.....

P.S. The pic accompanying this entry was my attempt at an "artistic shot" (as suggested by ian smiley, ok!! I'm not good at artistic shots!!).....it was denied by the Pic-Link staff.....does it look immoral or indecent? I don't think so!! It's just a torso with baby fat.....

Kristin!!!!!!!!

.....I 'd like to think of myself as a realistic person..... I mean, I doImage hosted by Photobucket.comn't usually have crushes on celebrities (ok, ok, I'll admit I had a crush on Donna Cruz....but that's it!!).....but my being realistic was totally shattered when my friend Cecil Danilo Azagra (bless him!!) persuaded me to watch Smallville on Studio 23, that's when I saw the lovely Kristin Kreuk in the role of Lana Lang!!

.....my God!! I was in love!!!.....I'd watch the show smiling like a fool every time Kristin is on screen flashing her gorgeous smile!!.....I was so captured by her that I'd sometimes forget the story and just stare at her!!.....

.....after two seasons, I'm still a Smallville fan (it's on Studio 23, Tuesdays, 9:00 PM), but my infatuation with Kristin has waned.....she still tugs at my stoic heart when I see her, but not that much.....

.....time to get back to reality.....

Teevee

..... I've been hooked on American Idol these past few months and with the exit of Vonzell last night, the finale will surely be an exciting one.....will it be Bo Bice (the rock idol) or Carrie Underwood (the country idol).....my bet was, and still is Carrie (ever since the early episodes, she has been my favorite, together with Anwar Robinson) .....although Bo has a big chance of winning because he's "different", it should be noted that only Carrie has never belonged to a "bottom" group.....

                                                   **********

.....ever since the Amazing Race stopped over the Philippines in Season 5, I always try to catch it on AXN every chance I got.....and last week, I saw the season finale of Season 7, and never was I more happy with the results..... Uchenna and Joyce won!!! yahoooo!!!..... this certainly proves that good people have good karma.....it's nice to note that Uchenna and Joyce played the game fairly and with heart (even helping Meredith and Gretchen on a Roadblock!!) .....they never resorted to the kind of play that the irksome Rob and Amber did (wehehehe!! just seeing Rob and Amber LOSE really made my day).....

                                                    **********

.....Alias rocks!!.....God bless AXN for showing past episodes every day (7:30 PM) and Studio 23 (back to back episodes every Thursday night!!).....Jennifer Garner sure is lovely and "believable" as a CIA agent.....and the show is filled with intriguing characters and kick-ass plots!!.....wow!!.....I actually don't know what season I'm watching now, and I don't care if Studio 23 seems to be ahead of the AXN showing.....I'm addicted and I can't wait for my next Alias fix.....

                                                     **********

.....I don't usually concern myself with the nonsense "battle" between ABS-CBN and GMA, but in the case of kiddie gag shows, I really need to voice this out.....Bubble Gang Jr. SUCKS!!!!.....aaaaarrrggghhhh!!!.....the show is so bad, it makes me wanna puke!!!.....poor kids!! they deliver their "jokes" (??) looking like they don't understand a word they're saying.....and to make up for the lack of jokes, the "brilliant" scriptwriters of the show decided to include the "outtakes" of the kids!! wow....that's about as funny as watching rice grow!!.....as for Going Bulilit, you can rest easy now, the competition is no competition at all.....

Super Sputum

.....I was out of the blogworld for a week because I went to Dumangas with my father for a short vacation.....and going to Dumangas via the "Inday Teling" bus reminded me of the time when I rode this very same bus on my way to Iloilo to enroll at the University of San Agustin.....

.....I have a really low "travel resistance" (meaning: I easily get sick when travelling long distances) so I make an effort to sleep (or close my eyes) while travelling.....

.....In this particular journey, we were already halfway to Iloilo, but I started feeling dizzy so I closed my eyes and tried to sleep.....I was sitting by the window of the bus.....the crisp morning air caressing my face.....when suddenly, out of nowhere.....

SPLAT!!!!

.....something liquid hit my right eye.....and when I touched the liquid to get it off my eye, I realized, in complete horror and shock.....that the liquid was not just any ordinary liquid.....but a yellowish, sticky liquid with brown speckles!!!.....

AAAAAARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

.....it was the sputum!! pleghm!! sip-on!! badlo!! (and any other synonym) of the old lady in the seat in front of me!!!.....and I can only assume that this is what happened:

.....she was coughing and she regurgitated her mouthful of sputum outside the window....and because of the laws of Physics regarding liquids thrown out of a moving object and putting in mind the wind factor, torque, acceleration, velocity, supernovas, water salinity and the force of the mystic knights of madripoor.....the flying sputum had no choice but to land squarely and cleanly on my right eye with a sickening SPLAT!!!.....

Boracay Kwatro

.....I went back to Boracay last April 24-26, 2005 as part of the Committee on Non-Academic awards who did some revisions on the guidelines for the evaluation of these awards (in other words: BORING STUFF)......

.....it was my 4th time there so I was finally able to notice some recurring phenomena and learn some nuggets of wisdom:

1. During the day when the sun is mightily bombarding the beach with its rays, a lot of Caucasians go out and do everything to get a tan.....but when the sun starts to set, it's the Pinoy tourists who dominate the beach.

2. The best way to pay for everything in higher prices is to speak in English or Tagalog.

3. The grilled pork chop priced at P100/100g is written correctly.....it does mean 1 peso per gram.

4. It doesn't matter if you're fat or thin or disfigured.....you can wear a two-piece swinsuit and still look beautiful.

5. In the dance floor, most foreign girls smell like vinegar.....Pinoy girls smell like Victoria's Secret (hmmm!).

.....and to those of you who haven't been to Boracay yet, here are some info about the place:

* The shoreline is divided into 3 stations:

Station 1 is the "sosyal" station where you can find the Pearl of the Pacific, Willy's and The Panoly. It's also the "night life capital" bacause the hottest nightspots are found there namely Cocomangas, Club Paraw and Pier One. It's also where the grotto is located. We stayed there on our 3rd visit.

Station 2 is the "mid-range" station. This is where you can find the famous "D'Mall de Boracay" (which is actually NOT a mall but a series of stalls and is currently undergoing expansion). You can also find most of the outdoor restaurants here and some of the better hotels like Le Soleil and the Boracay Regency. We stayed here on the first and second visit.

Station 3 is the "pang-masa" station. This is the most crowded station because it's chock-full of affordable resorts. It's also the location of the original "talipapa" (which burned down recently and is curently being rebuilt). We stayed there on this recent 4th visit.

You can actually walk through all of these stations without feeling like you've just done the "alay-lakad" because there are lots of eye candy around (not just the pretty ladies in bikinis but also the different hotels and resorts boasting all sorts of "theme").

So come and enjoy Boracay!!

The CD

..... I was at the CPC Office of Student Affairs talking to Ms.Glenn Tercero when I heard some songs playing on her PC..... after a while, I noticed that the songs were good and the singer's voice was great..... so I asked her who the singer was.....

....."It's Jed Madela" answered Tope (or Mr. Christopher Palmares, the Student Activities Coordinator.....wherever you are 'pe, we miss your presence and wit here!!).....

.....and so I went to the PC and listened to more of Jed Madela's songs.....and I really liked what I heard..... and since there's a CD-Writer on the PC (Tope was gone by then so I wasn't able to ask him where the songs came from), I copied the songs on a blank CD.....

.....when I brought the CD home and listened to it, my mom and dad really liked it too!! Now this is a rare occurrence because my mom is not the music-minded type, she could practically live without music (as long as she has her garden).....my dad even mistook Jed to be a foreign singer (yes, his voice is THAT good)....

.....now this is the dilemma: I have no idea what album the songs came from!!.....

.....and then one day, I came across Tope's profile on Friendster and saw a "Jed" give him a testi.....I messaged this Jed and asked him about the album where the songs came from (I assumed him to be a Jed fan since he used Jed's pic on his profile).....

.....I was quite surprised when he replied, and it's Jed himself!!!.....and we have two things in common: he's an Ilonggo and and an Augustinian!! (too bImage hosted by Photobucket.comad we don't have "good singing voice" in common...wehehehehe!).....and he graciously answered my questions.....

.....the album was "SONGS REDISCOVERED", and it contains great renditions of "Can't Cry Hard Enough", "For the First Time" (the favorite of my parents), "How Can I Fall", "Love Always Finds A Way", "Changes in My Life", "Only Reminds Me of You" (my favorite), "Heaven Knows" and others.....

.....and so I bought an original CD..... and it's worth every centavo.....

.....and I recommend it to all of you.....buy a copy, and tell me what you think.....

Sleepless in Boracay

.....whew!! just got back from Boracay!!.....and what a vacation it was.....

.....it was my third trip there and the magic of the place still amazes me.....Boracay really is different....it feels "foreign".....
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
.....we stayed there for three days and two nights.....and spent every night outside, soaking in the nightlife at Pier One, Summer Place, D'Mall, etc.....

.....as usual, all things in Boracay don't come cheap.....one small bottle of C2 (that's Cool and Clean iced tea) cost P25.00!!.....and don't make the mistake of talking to the vendors in Tagalog if you know how to speak in Bisaya, because the price will rise up to 10% (as experienced by one colleague)!!.....

.....just to have fun, I talked to the vendors in English (complete with the American "twang" to sound convincing).....and that's where my "bilib" in the Filipinos resurfaced.....because all the vendors (even the guy selling "taho") knows how to speak English!!.....

.....one thing I noticed about Boracay though is the abundance of green "lumot" on the shores (especially near the grotto at Station 1 where the "lumot" is so thick).....the officials of Malay, Aklan seem to be overlooking the fact that the "lumot" is so unsightly and makes the water look dirty.....no action has been done to eradicate the "lumot" as of this writing.....

....and now that the Boracay fever is singed within me, it feels quite nice to look at the photographs and reminisce on my three days there.....three days of "lumot", henna tattoos, boating, souvenir hunting, picture-taking, dancing, drinking (moderately of course, don't want rashes to surface), sleeping (at daytime to recharge for the night), and of course basking and bathing at the beach while oogling at the sexy and beautiful ladies passing by.....that's Boracay.....and I will surely come back next year.....

Kalbo

.....I made a huge mistake.....during the deliberation of the Committee on Non-Academic Awards (where I'm a member) of CPC, I said something which tested my "integrity".....

.....the committee was very busy at that time tallying the points of all the student organizations who were vying for the Top 10.....and as the day progressed, it became clear that the top spot will be awarded to either the CESS (Computer Engineering Student Society) or last year's top organization, the UPBMarESC (United Power Builders of Marine Engineering Student Council).....

.....CESS is the organization of the department I head, so it was only a natural instinct for me to defend the organization without seeming too eager.....and when the partial deliberation was over, the UPBMarESC indeed registeredImage hosted by Photobucket.com an impressive number of points (11,000+!!)....whereas the CESS only registered 9700+.....

.....but these results were not yet final because the Dean of Student Affairs will still re-evaluate the points of the top two organizations.....and it was then that I made my mistake.....

.....I said: Pag dumaog pa kami mapakalbo gid ko!!
Translation: If we win, I will have my head shaved!!....

.....although it did hurt that we lost, at least I was quite sure that I will not shave my head, it was a "calculated comment".....

.....but after the re-evaluation, some points were deducted from the UPBMarESC because their SOLAS and other trainings were not considered as org activities.....and the final result??

.....UPBMarESC: 8700+ points

.....CESS: 9700+ points

.....I'm a man of my word....so I had my head shaved.....and I look like a buffoon!.....but at least we won!!.....yahoooo!!!

P.S. I'll be in Boracay this April 1-3.....haaaaaahhh!! Finally!!! A much-needed break!!

Da Book

.....Holy Week is coming.....and I'm in for a long (and much-needed) break.....I'll be going home to my hometown of Tinundan St., Pres. Roxas, Capiz, Philippines, 5803.....where I'll be eating all the delicious food that my mom will surely feed me.....and sleeping all day long.....aaaawwww......

.....but the downside to going home is that I will be 'Offline' for 5 days.....no internet surfing for me.....and that's where a good book could really help.....

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
.....I've been really curious in Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" because of its controversial theme....but I can't find a copy here in Roxas City.....so I really have to go to Iloilo to get a copy.....until today.....because my good friend Marlou (who I met thru Pic-Link) sent me one!! Yahoooo!!.....and dig this: the book was sent all the way from Oroquieta City!!.....

.....now I can't wait to start reading it......

.....have a nice and meaningful Holy Week everyone!!

Sentimo

.....what is the value of several centavos today?..... nothing, it seems, because the cashiers at Gaisano City here in Roxas never bother to give you your change if it's "only a few centavos"..... they just assume that you wont care or bother with it anyway.....

.....but last week when I bought some groceries, my total went up to P95.25, and the cashier asked me if I have 25 centavos so that she could give me a 5 peso coin..... i dont have the 25 centavos so I assumed that she will not bother since it's "only a few centavos".....but she did bother!!.....and she gave me a change of 4.75!!.....

.....I was fuming inside because I hate having 25 centavo coins in my wallet.....I already have a jar full of them at home and I certainly don't want to add more.....so I said to myself, "Vengeance will be mine!!!".....

.....so I returned to Gaisano 3 days later and bought some items, pre-calculated to have a total of P89.65, and I took my line in Cashier No.3 (the same lady who "bothered" with the sentimos was manning the register).....when my turn came, she did her job as usual....and I gave her P100 to pay for my grocery items worth P89.65.....and then she gave me two 5 peso coins as change.....

Hadji: Kulang man sinsilyo mo miss?
(Why is my change incorrect, miss?)

Cashier: 35 centavos man lang sir.
(It's only 35 centavos, sir.)

Hadji: Bal-an ko man, pero imol ko ya ngadaan, kinanglan ko na ya ang 35 centavos. (I know that, but I'm poor so I need that 35 centavos)

Cashier: (somewhat surprised and dumbfounded)...dali lang gid sir ha, mangita ko anay sinsilyo...
(Could you wait a while sir, while I look for some change?)

Hadji: Oo, hulaton ko lang.
(Yes, I'll wait for it!)

.....and so the cashier was really inconvenienced because she had to open a bag full of 10 and 5 centavo coins to give me my 35 centavos.....but revenge was revenge, and I intend to make her feel the value of the 'sentimo'.....

.....when I got my P10.35, I opened my wallet and out popped two 25 centavo coins....the coins rolled in different directions, one went directly under the table at the nearby open cafe and the other one rolled under a display of figurines.....

.....did I pick up the errant coins?.....

.....why bother?.....
